US Chicago: On Tuesday in Chicago officials of a Christian college in suburban said that they have begun efforts to remove a professor who was placed on leave after maintain that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.
Wheaton College revealed action against Larycia Hawkins in a statement on its website, explaining Provost Stanton Jones initiated the termination-for-cause proceeding after Hawkins refused to participate in “clarifying conversations” about theological issues.
Hawkins says that she wasn’t differentiating Jesus and Mohammad. In a statement posted Tuesday afternoon, she said she’ll address the termination proceedings Wednesday morning at the Chicago Temple. In comments made to the local PBS show Chicago Tonight, Hawkins explains that the recent statements “absolutely” were not contrary to the college’s Christian ideals.
Hawkins also completed a headscarf to confirmation solidarity with Muslims. The private scriptural school west of Chicago said it placed Hawkins on paid authority leave in December because of theological statements “that seem inconsistent with Wheaton College’s doctrinal convictions, which she voluntarily agreed to support and uphold when she entered into an employment agreement with the college.”
Hawkins also had begun wearing a hijab, the headscarf worn by some Muslim women, but the school has said that is not why she was placed on leave.
A spokeswoman for Hawkins, Shelly Ruzicka, revealed that the professor wouldn’t instantly comment on the effort to fire her but that it comes as Hawkins “maintains Christian support for the Muslim community amid the ongoing anti-Muslim climate.”
